I’ve been writing prose since the age of three when I wrote all over my mum and dad’s record collection.
Among the lost classics are the short story I gave one English teacher about a kid who murders his English teacher; the brusque autobiography I’ve had to write every time I claim benefits; and the brilliant if peevish exposition on number-lines in an infinite universe which failed my Cambridge entrance. Works currently in my possession (which in turn possess me) include:
prose -
- "A Very Short History of Twentieth Century Music" (2003).
An overview of significant events and creations, including examinations of jazz and rock, highlighting sociological and political aspects along with the simply musical. I’ve considered phenomena such as the ‘canon’ of ‘great’ composers, the osmosis of styles from black music (and Jewish) to white mainstream America, and the growing obsession with musical artists (and artistes) who are neither musical nor artists (or artistes "er, I think he means you, Victoria"). Publication is hardly imminent: there aren’t any wizards in it.
- "Problems With Philosophy" (2001). A series of polemics considering the loss of the ethical sciences in the face of the natural sciences and the subsequent mess our world finds itself in. Taking an unashamedly ‘left’ perspective I look behind an age-old procession of grimy self-serving politicians to a history of dapper selfless philosophers who couldn’t help their wrong turns. It is interesting to note that at the time of writing the British were already bombing Iraq and a Bush-led war was considered inevitable.
- "Mind’s Eye," a shortish novel (2002). Loosely based on a series of psychiatric aberrations. My editor thinks it needs another draft but I think he doesn’t take the right drugs.
poems -

- "Eastminster" (2000).
